The glacier is a must see on a trip to Sonamarg. Located just 16 km away from Rah Villas, we can arrange for either a hike or a pony ride up to the glacier. The frozen surface of the glacier is excellent for sledging and is a major attraction during summer months.
Nilagrad is the confluence of the river Nilagrad with the Sindh situated 6 km away from Sonamarg. The river is heavy with red silt from the mountains turning the waters red. The Baltic people who reside here believe the river to have curative powers and throng to the river every Sunday to bathe in its waters.
This beautiful meadow lies right at the foot of the Zoji La pass and is literally the last place in Kashmir. The river from the foot of the Amarnath glacier meets the Sindh near Baltal. It stands at a height of 2,743m and during the annual Amarnath pilgrimage there are tents set up here. It is possible to walk to the Amarnath cave in one day. This is a much shorter route than the conventional one from Pahalgam which takes 3 days.
There are many beautiful lakes near Sonamarg, filled with trout. You can either hike or hire ponies up to the lakes of Vishansar, Krishansar , Gangabal and Gadsar. The Vishansar and Krishnasar lakes are a 2 day trek to and fro from Rah Villas while the Gangabal and Gadsar Lakes are further up and can take up to 5 days to trek. A trek to one of the lakes can offer you the unique opportunity to camp under the clear star filled skies. Fishing in the crystal clear water lakes, surrounded by the stunning Himalayan vistas can be an amazing experience.
